My father has a small soft swelling on his scalp that the doctor says is a sebaceous cyst. What is it?

This is a cyst or sac that is formed when an oil-producing gland in the skin gets blocked and swollen. It can develop on the scalp, trunk, face and genitals. A sebaceous cyst need not be treated but can be surgically removed under local anaesthesia, if it is unsightly or causes discomfort. Do not pick at a sebaceous cyst as it can get infected, requiring treatment with antibiotics.
