Slight sleep deprivation may be caused due to stress and lasts for a day or two. Reducing stress levels and creating a calm and comfortable environment when you go to sleep should do the trick.

a)      Take a warm bath before you sleep but don’t dampen your hair.

e)      Stick to a schedule. Go to bed and wake up at the same time everyday and your body will get used to it.

f)       Make sure your bed is clean and neat and you have comfortable pillows, mattress, and covers.

g)      Exercise also helps. But don’t exercise right before you sleep as your body might get charged up instead.

h)      Keep your mobile and laptop away from your bed.

i)        You can turn on some soft music if that helps you sleep.

Some people might find it difficult to sleep in spite of trying out all this and that might be an indication of a deeper problem like insomnia. If you haven’t been able to get proper sleep for more than 3 weeks, you should get checked by a doctor. Insomnia can be transient which lasts for a week or so. The other two types are acute and chronic insomnia. Acute insomnia occurs when a person is unable to sleep properly at night for a month or less. This can usually be treated with proper therapy whereas in case of chronic insomnia, medication and therapy are needed as that’s severe and can go on for months or even years.

Chronic insomnia is the worst kind of all. People with chronic insomnia are mostly unable to sleep properly at night for months or even years. This leads to several severe health conditions. It could be a hereditary condition or can be caused due to stress, depression, low self esteem, schizophrenia, post partum depression, hypersensitivity, bipolar disorder, substance abuse, or a combination of any of the causes. A person may have weight fluctuations, develop aging skin, dark circles, have hallucinations, have problems concentrating, experience intense fatigue, have withdrawal symptoms and slurred speech as well. Chronic insomnia can also lead to fatal conditions if not treated for years. A person with chronic insomnia needs a combination of therapy sessions, medication, and counseling to get to the root of the problem and solve it to get back to a normal lifestyle. Chronic insomnia needs a long time to get cured but it’s never too late to start treatment if one can’t sleep properly for over a month
